Hey, everyone, I’m new here. I’m 18 and a freshman in college.
Recently my dad "got into" motorcycles and he ended up dragging me
in. I love riding and I absolutely love the MPGs motorcycles get. Now,
currently, I am riding a 04 Honda Rebel 250. I’ve been riding for
about 2 months now and this bike is getting to small. From here stems
the problem. I need a bike that is comfortable, good on gas, and
reliable. I’m thinking about a displacement of around 650(not too
powerful and still good on gas). Now, I’m not interested in sport
bikes or cruisers. I want more of a standard bike, with a good seat,
and the ability for to attach saddle bags or the like. Now bikes I’ve
looked at; Honda’s CB from the 1980’s( I really like the style, but
the age has drawbacks.; The suzuki SV650( I like this bike’s style too
and its new, which means less chance of problems for a while). My
experience is severely limited and I want this first bike to be able
to last me a while and to be a good bike. So is anyone has any
thoughts please share. Thanks.

SV650 is good but can be a little powerful. if you're good with the
throttle, this won't be a problem. the GS500e is another standard, hasn't
been changed much since the 80s, can be had cheap, even brand new. if
you're tall, check out some 650 dual sports, especially the KLR. it'll run
forever, it cheap, and is incredibly fun to ride.
if you have money to burn, get a Ducati Monster 620ie.

You could/should look at a Yamaha Diversion 600. It's an inline four
standard with decent power and a small cockpit fairing; fast enough without
getting ahead of yourself. It should also be a decent tourer (a bit larger
than the SV and if memory serves me a less agressive riding position) and
hard sidecases don't look out of place on it.
For an idea look at http://www.fahrschule-hadwiger.de/images/ymaha_600
_diversion.jpg for instance.
Good luck, Ton

in the US, the Diversion is called the Seca II, and hasn't been made for
about 15-20 years. it's a great bike, if you can find one that runs.
another good yamaha in that size is the FZ6 (fazer, elsewhere), though i'm
not sure how powerful it is.

It reqquires the rider rev it out ALL the time to get it going anywhere. A
nightmare at stop lights as it has fuck all torque to help get things
moving, so it's rev and slip the clutch. Not a bike I'd recommend to anyone
for anything when there are SV 650's, Bandit 650's, Kwak Z750's and (God
help me) Honda Deuville's around.
