I have been looking at a Honda , 1971, CB750. It needs some work but
it does run. It makes a noise at idle which they say is the timing
chain. The noise goes away when it gets above idle. I'm pretty sure I
can get this bike fot $600. Anyone have any experience with this or
something similar?

It was a great motorcycle in its day, but that was a long
time ago.  About that time I had a 350cc Honda and loved it.
My experience with older motorcycles, however, is that parts
are hard to come by and they are a hassle to keep running.
If you are buying it to ride, my recommendation is get a
motorcycle that is less than 7 years old.  -- steve

Not with the CB750, but I have a 1970 Yamaha XS1 (650cc) and the value
keeps appreciating. I imagine the same would be true for the old Honda. A
quick peek at ebay came up with 1184 hits for Honda CB750, so parts are
available. Although it's a 4-cylinder, you wouldn't have to worry about
fixing it if something goes wrong; electrically and mechanically, they were
pretty simple to maintain and repair compared to modern bikes. $600 sounds
decent for a 1971. A few more bucks to put in top riding shape and you'd
have something that could easily keep up with today's bikes for much less
than half the price. And you'll get a lot of 'oohs' and 'aahs' whenever you
park it.

Best,

Lexapro beweerde :

Buy it! I have a CB750 F2 from '78. Bought it for 400 euro's. Best bike
ever. Simple maintenance, and if you know the adresses, plenty of spare
parts. This thing keeps running!

There is a timing chain adjustment there on the bike, follow the
instructions in the manual, it's an easy fix.(adjustment)

As far as value goes, that bike could be worth a whole lot of money,
and parts are VERY EASY to get.
VERY EASY!

 Buy the bike.
