Avis, Dollar, etc. Does anyone rent motorcycles that you know of. I
would love to rent several over time so that I can figure out exactly
what fits my personality the best.

There's a place in San Francisco, Dubbleju, that rents motorcycles, but
they have Harley dressers and BMW tourers and enduros. Somehow I think
it's unlikely t hat you'll find sportbikes for rent.

Another approach, possibly more economical, would be to just buy an
older version of a type of bike you might be interested in. Ride it for
a season, then sell it and get another one.

What's your riding background?

They don't come any greener!  That is a good idea though. I have
started to watch the local Craig's list for motorcycles. Am not sure
of how old I want to go though. Don't know the conversion rate
for miles on a motorcycle as compared to miles on a car. What
is high miles on a bike with say a 650cc engine?

Just a couple of weeks ago we rented a bike from a company named
Eaglerider.  They are in many cities and rent several kinds of bikes,
but in San Francisco where we rented ours they have only Harleys and a
couple of Gold Wings.  If you go to their website (eaglerider.com) you
can see their locations and call to ask about models that are
available.

My friend Denise has wanted to buy a Harley for several years, and
finally I suggested we rent one.  It was something like $175 for a
day, including insurance, for a Softail Heritage, 2006, almost brand
new.  Seemed like a lot but it's not something we do often.  It was
unlimited mileage and we went on a long day ride.

I would recommend them, I mean I thought it went pretty well.

I think that that was the company that rented some Harleys to a quartet
of riders from England that we ran into on our ride to Bodie last month.
They normally ride sportbikes back in the UK, but were having a gas on
the hogs anyway.
