Please could someone give me some advice/recommendations on buying a
battery charger for my boyfriend for christmas.

He’s got a suzuki bandit 600.

I want on that will be safe for long term use throughout the winter
whilst its stuck in the garage.

Ive been looking at the Oxford Maximiser and Optimate III. But have no
idea which would be the best or even what i should be looking for.

Please help. Thanks in advance

What you want is a "battery tender" , a charger that goes into a float mode
, or a *very* tiny charge rate when the battery reaches a certain voltage .
Mine charges at 2 amperes if the battery voltage is below 13.2 volts when I
hookt it up . It drops to a holding mode when the battery voltage reaches
14.4 volts or thereabouts . While charging , mine shows a yellow light on
the front , when it goes to float mode the green
 light turns on .
If either of the ones you mentioned operates in this manner , thay's the
one you want . If they both do , buy the cheaper .

I've got a  Battery Tender myself and I'm happy with it but I
understand that for a gel type battery you may want something
a little different. It's my understanding that gel charges at a
higher voltage.

I don't know whether the bandit would have a conventional or get
type battery installed but this would be a good thing to ask about.

voltage .

I am not an expert, but my understanding is better for all batteries to
charge at a slower rate, though some can handle a higher rate than others if
necessary.  My favorite is a Battery Minder by VDC.  It also has a pulse
mode the desulphates the plates.  These are advertised as great for all
battery types.  But if you have questions you can ask the manufacturer.
I've been using them for years.

Again no expert, but I agree that 'All' batteries will be better charged
at a low charge rate if possible, but not all chargers give a perfect DC
constant current, and I believe it is here that the Gel cells often fall.

As was suggested earlier and here, Ask for help on the type of Battery
fitted, and how to charge using a 'battery tender', but also confirm,
form the manufacturer that this changer is compatible with your battery.

All the best Vaughn
