Any suggestions on what I need to do before I gas this bike up and
actually try to start it?
I’ve cleaned the carb and adjusted idle and mixture screws three half
turns back from bottom.
I’ve taped all bare wires and cleaned all elec connections. New
battery. All lights and signals work.
Changed perfectly good looking 21 year old oil to new oil.
Will Install cleaned and radiator shop coated gas tank.
Bike clutches and will go through all gears smoothly.
Pushed bike in each gear and motor turns over.
Gently pushed kick start and motor turns over.
Will install new plug. Will Replace cracked plug cap.
Once all that is done I think I’ll be ready to jump on that kick start
and see what happens.
I’m looking for any suggestions for other things I can do that would
prevent a "IF YOU JUST WOULD HAVE" disaster from happening. I
really want to try to start if on my own before I take it anywhere for
a final tune up or minor tear down and cleaining.
Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Set the idle mixture screw to 1.5 turns open and back off the idle RPM
screw until the slide or butterfly is completely closed. The engine
will start easier and you can adjust the idle speed once the engine is
warmed up. On slide valve carburetors, turning the idle mixture screw
clockwise richens the mixture. On carbs which have butterflies, turning
the idle mixture screw clockwise leans the mixture.

One thing I would do, just in case, is to remove the spark plug and squirt
about 3 squeezes of oil into the chamber, turn it over about 8 or 10 times
with the plug out and then let it sit a couple or three hours before
starting it up. You just can't trust to chance the fact that there is oil in
the chamber and if there isn't you're on the fast track to trouble.

That might help to free up stuck rings as well, or so the old wife's tale goes.
