Yesterday I was inspecting the front brake pads of my 2001 Honda Magna
VF750C.
After 16K miles the brake rotor reached its service limit - 5mm. It has some
noticeable grooves on it. The left brake pad (where the brake cylinder is)
is worn much more than the right one but both can still be used.
Is that normal for a 16K miles motorycle? Why is brake rotor worn before the
pads?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thank you.

The brake pads on my Hondas always lasted
considerably longer than that although that was several
years ago. I wonder if maybe your have had a brake dragging
and that caused the excessive wear? Steve@29

Note that Orlin said his brake *rotor* wore out in 16,000 miles, not the
pads.
I've run a few bikes over 100,000 miles still using the original rotors,
including one that had a sidecar on it for 30K or so. My guess is that
something is seriously out of alignment or adjustment if his rotors are
dead at a mere 16K.

Yep, your point is well taken, he did say rotors.
I've never had to replace rotors at less than 100K.
Something is wrong there. I've never known anyone to have
worn rotors beyond service limit at 16k. -- steve@29

It's obvious that somebody ran the pads down to metal at one time or
another. The only other thing I can think of is some rocks are getting
between your pads and rotor somehow. Rocks act like grind stones.
The third maybe is defective pads, poor quality pads, wrong pads.
