My charging system seems to be poor. This is a 1996 Suzuki 1400
intruder. I have to keep putting the battery on the charger or it
eventually runs down. The battery voltage when it's running is only
13.3v. With the charger on it it's 16v. and charges up nice and fine.
The book says it should output 14 to 15 volts at 5000 rpm. Mine never
changes.
SO, sounds like the regulator/rectifier right? Or the alternator? I
don't know which.

Statistically the R/R is more likely to fail. But it can still be a bad
connector in the system.
Good idea to find the connectors from alternator to R/R and check. With
engine running check all phase-to-pase voltages. If equal, the problem is
in the R/R

How old is the battery? What type of battery charger? Hopefully you
are not using a 'car battery' charger. FYI... too much current can warp
tiny lead panels of mc battery. Battery Tenders are good; I believe
Battery Minder is better [my opinion/I have both]. Battery Minder
desulfates the battery as well as charges it.....in time reduces the
amps and volts. They pulse a frequency to desulfate the battery.

The battery is 4 years old and is a Jap battery. It is sealed but I
managed to remove the cover and found the acid below the plates. I
filled it back up and recharged it again.
I have a car charger that is only 6 amps max taper charger. It tapers
down to 1 amp when charged and usually don't go over 4 amps. It just
maintains 16v. I thought it would only draw what it needs weather a car
batt or a mc batt or atv batt, etc.
Anyway I bought a new cheap Walmart battery to put in it. How many years
are they supposed to last?

Bike battery is the only thing I buy at WalMart. Current one is going on 4
years - the longest of any battery I've had.
And I've had a few :-)
