Is there a hinge in the pedal to keep it from breaking off if you fall down
in the dirt?

Do you mean flexible in the sense that it bends or do you mean in the
sense that the piece that you hook your toe under is spring loaded?
If the latter it's so that it doesn't break off when you drop the bike.
The DR200 is intended for a certain amount of off-road riding where
dropping the bike on occasion is a given.
