I recently completed a MSF course and I am in the market for a good
basic bike in the 250cc range.  I am looking for a simple and easy to
use commuter that is good on gas.  I have no interest in taking the
motorcycle on the freeway for any long stretches.  Around town, suburbs
and country riding is where the bike will be used.

I am not interested in the Ninja 250 or the Nighthawk 250.  I have not
been able to locate a Viragos in my area, new or used.
So, I have narrowed my choices to what is the most available in my
area.  The Honda Rebel or the Suzuki GZ250.
I am 6', 200lbs and have riden both during the MSF course.  They both
seemed to fit me fine, but I am curious about any other info on these
two that may help sway me in one direction.  Such as power,
maintainence, mileage, etc etc.

Thank you for any assistance!!

I have a rather strong lean toward singles -- simplier, easier to
maintain.  For me, the Rebel's sode covers poked my legs, I nearly got
a GZ250 for my street riding.

Basically it is a matter of personal choice.  Both have been
around for a long while.

Rebel gets its heritage from the venerable CM185 of the late
'70s, engine technology has been around for a long time and is
bullet proof.

GZ250 Marauder has been around for a while too, getting its
heritage from the venerable GN250 of the '80s.

GZ250 has a decent 3.7 gallon tank whereas Rebel has 2.6,
meaning you will spend less time at the gas pump with the GZ.
Anticipate getting 60 to 70 miles per gallon with either, with
the GZ probably edging out the Rebel slightly.  Rebel will have
slightly higher top speed.  Ergoes for someone as tall as you
are probably better on the GZ.  Most feel cramped on the Rebel.

Sweet spot (speed at which motor in top gear feels comfortable)
is probably around 50 - 55 MPH for both, although they will do
faster.

It is your call, you cannot go wrong with either one.

There is an interesting blog about a rider and his GZ250 in
Northeast Alabama at

You might find it interesting reading.
