Thanks, Joe. I've added it to my FAQ ... and combined a few threads where you
posted this. ;-)

LOL. Yup. Gotta spread the word to the world. Every motorcyclist deserves
to live.
Only thing I didn't like about it was that it seems to be written for those
who live in areas where lane splitting is legal. The advice regarding that
doesn't really apply to me here in NJ. I can just about guarantee that if I
split lanes here in NJ, someone is going to open their door, throw trash out
their window at my head, or swerve and squish me into the vehicle next to
theirs - and none of it accidentally.

The justification for lane splitting is that "In the Hurt study, more
riders on the freeway got nailed from behind while staying in their
lane than riders who crashed while lane-splitting." This would be
from them not watching their ass -- company van, car, or bike; I
never stop faster than the vehicle behind me. When stopped on the
bike I have a rabbit hole and am watching behind me for the guy that
will be hitting the car in front of me as I dodge.
A second factor in lane splitting being safer in the Hurt Study was
the wider lane width back then -- 15 feet if I recall correctly.
Current standard is 12 feet.
I also disagree with the statement " And when all else fails, there's
no substitute for having a good DOT-qualified helmet on your head."
That is pure bullshit. A DOT -qualified helmet on my head is not
going to do anything to save me if I am broadsided by a red-light
runner doing 35 mph. If I get into a collision I *WILL* be hurt,
helmet or not. When it comes to defensive riding, failure is not an
option.
PacBell (SBC, ATT, whatever we are) Defensive Driving courses enourage
use of the horn to get people's attention. I have changed out the
wimp stock disc horn for a pair of 138db highway blasters. I sound
like a Cadillac.

Um... That way when you feel threatened, people will hear the horn and
start looking for a Cadillac?
I suggest a loud motorcycle-sounding horn...
