1.  I have to ask how you can maintain balance at low speed and/or stops if
you can't put your right foot down.

2.  Can't you use your left foot to start the bike before you get on?

This is the easiest way: if you really like Honda XL600's, go to ebay and
look for a 1994 or later XL650 engine (or a whole motorcycle).

It would be easier to put the XL650 motor into your XL600 frame than to try
to fit a starter to your motor.

The problem with installing an electric starter on a motor that didn't have
one is how do you *mechanically* connect the starter to the crankshaft when
you want it to start and *mechanically* disconnect the starter from the
crankshaft once the engine has started.

The XL650 has to have a different crankcase so the starter reduction gear
shafts have holes to fit into. The Spragg clutch bolts to the back of the
alternator rotor, so, even if you had the Honda starter, you would need too
many other Honda parts to install the starter.

#4, #5 are the reduction gear shafts. #2 and #3 are the Sprag clutch. #1 is a
large idler gear that only turns when the starter is turning.
