SAN JUAN BAUTISTA (AP) -- Organizers of an annual Independence Day
motorcycle rally that inspired the 1950s Marlon Brando outlaw biker
movie "The Wild One" asked this small community to host the event
after being driven out by its longtime host city. - The City Council
is scheduled to consider a proposal March 21 from Biker Design, the
Florida company trying to organize the rally that attracts more than
100,000 bikers a year from around the country.
Officials in neighboring Hollister voted Feb. 6 to scrap plans for
this year's rally, arguing the city cannot afford police patrols. The
city spent $250,000 last year after the rally's nonprofit organizing
group said it could not pay.
The weekend rally is best known for the near-rioting of thousands of
bikers that broke out in the streets of Hollister during a stop on the
1947 gypsy motorcycle tour.
That event is credited with inspiring the Brando movie about a
renegade biker gang that invades a small town.
The rally stopped after that year but resumed in 1997 on the 50th
anniversary of the melee.
