Hey, I have a Honda Goldwing 1100, 1983- I'm having a small issue with
starting the thing. I have recently replaced the started, and the battery.
But every I go to start her, she sounds like there is no juice in the
battery to turn her over. It putts over like the compression is too hard
for the starter. When I take one, or all of the pluggs out - she turns over
with no problem! Of course will not run with no plugs!
I have tested the stator, working fine. I have tested the starter silenoid,
working fine. The battery is new, tested fine. The wiring all looks fine.
The starter is working fine when the pluggs are out, or when she is not in
the engine.
Now, to get her running, which she does well once she does start - I have to
push her, all systems work great! I can put her in N and press the starter
while she is running- it works! Its just that the engine seems like its two
hard to start under the new starter, battery.
The mystery of all this is - once every 10 attempts she will start like
nothings wrong! ! ! ! ! Please help if you can.

Proper/solid/clean battery ground?
Thanks,

Jasper,
Also being the proud owner of one of the GREATEST bikes made....... and
having had the same type of prob....
What I did:
starting at the battery - remove, clean with scotch pad, lube with
di-electric grease (radio shak) and reassemble:
battery posts and associated post wires
starter terminal and ALL wires (you can [with care] diss-assemble the
solenoid, clean contacts do NOT grease contacts :>}}
do same with starter (I know it's new, but clean it)...r&r or loosen up and
clean engine contact points and bolts too
after doing the above on mine - the starter (original) appears to want to
spin out of the bike......
IMHO - if there's ANY corrosion in the system, ,,,,,,, like I said, clean,
clean, clean and grease - worked for me YMMV
and as a side effect, I have 12+ volts at idle (900rpm or so) -
another point - I replaced the "water battery" with a "gel battery" - THAT
was like getting two batteries in one... better cranking power and no water
to boil out.... the battery in the 1100 run's HOT - and the water
'disappeared - not any more...... again ymmv
but that's my story, give it a whack and reply back with results please.

I have an 83 wing, bought new on May 19, 1983. I have put 271,000 klm
on it. I have had your exact problem. I have gone through all you
have done and much more. It turned out to be the vaccuum advance.
The vacuum hose is not routed to stop fuel and byproducts from working
their way down to the advance, rotting the diaphragm and seizing in
the full advance position. (my mechanical advance was seized as
well.) This causes a pre-ignition situation which stalls the motor
trying to turn over. Flip the ignition kill button, hit the starter,
while the engine is turning over flip the switch on. The momentum of
the engineturning over will usually get past the pre-ig and start.
When you replace the advance, install a new hose and route it up in a
6 or 8 inch loop to stop the rotting again. You might check this hose
and drain it once in a while too.
