I'm going to buy a Honda VF750C '82 and, since my
knowledge about motorcycles is somewhat
crippled, i'm looking for input on two things.

1. Are there general issues with that bike?

2. What testing can one do while buying one?

Well, that bike is 25 years old. Why not find something
a little more new? Even if it's low mileage, it has expos-
ure to chronological problems/breakage.

Is this what it looks like?

You might visit the following sites, and learn as much as
possible:

If your purchase interest remains, I'd just schedule a
check-up/assessment of the bike with your local Honda
dealer. Wouldn't that be the best plan?

If you can't/won't do that, then test ride the bike for as
long as possible, and let it get as hot as possible. Make
sure the thermostatically controlled fan cycles on and the bike never
overheats. I guess it's probably got 5 speeds and a 6th speed overdrive,
like the V65. Make sure all the shifting is smooth and trouble free. If it
has self-canceling signals again, like the V65, verify their oper-ation.
And, lots of other things....

Wait, maybe you could schedule the bike for a check-up/assessment at your
local Honda dealer. Would that
work?  <g>

It sounds like you have your mind made up already. I hope you can get
it cheap.

Yes, it's a typically over-complicated Honda that was originally
designed to showcase Honda's technological superiority. Yamaha and
Suzuki also built V-4's, but Suzuki abandoned the design. Yamaha still
makes V-4 cruisers and occasionally ressurrects the V-Max.

V-4's are OK, but...

If there is anything wrong with the pistons or piston rings, the
engine has to be removed from the frame and the crankcases have to be
separated.

If you bought a 1980's motorcycle which had an inline-4, at least you
would be able to do a top end job (pistons, rings, gaskets, valves) on
the engine without removing it from the frame.

Compression test. Generator charging voltage test. Be sure that all
the gears in the transmission work and that it stays in second gear
until you decide to shift to third gear. Be sure it doesn't overheat.
Listen for "funny noises".

This one i get. Will do.

How do i heat it up maximally (in order to test, that is)?
Running on low gear? High gear? Lower/upper rotation?

Got that too. Can you provide an MP3-file as an example
for a "funny" noise as well as one with a "boring" one?
No, just kidding. Thanks for the hints. It's really
appreciated.

I'd take the bike to the shop but the local one i've found
seems to be more keen on selling me a new one than
taking a look at the old one.

Konrad, BUDDY.............
I think there is a problem here ! ;-)

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?  If so, what?
That is very likely WAY too much bike for a rookie.

Next, with your vast mechanical expertise.........
You need to do one of two things:
Find a mechanic to check it out (Honda, Independent or Shade Tree)
OR
Take a test drive and if it feels good, runs good and sounds good buy it and
DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.

Unless, of course, you are a rookie, in which case you shouldn't even be
looking at a bike like that !!!
