I am looking at buying a 2000 honda shadow that has only 1200 miles on
it, but while riding it today I noticed it was smoking then noticed
oil all over the engine.  After taking off the air breather assembly i
noticed it was full of oil, which is why it was smoking.  Our best
guess is that the piston rings are bad and blowing oil into the
breather via the crankcase breather hose.
Just looking to see if you guys might think anything different.

Also this cycle had been literally sitting up in a barn untouched for
the last 7 years.  The orginal owner vanished and his estate was just
now sold.
I just figured the cylinder walls had rusted and when it was cranked
it jacked up the rings.

Any input would be appreicated,
  Thanks Marshmanjr.

It's possible. Or you might just have overfilled the oil.

i did have a relative who thought he was draining the oil when he drined
the filter located in a spot on the bottom of the crankcase.
he would then fill with 2 quarts of oil.
after a few of these treatments, the bike would smoke when revved up.
he finally brought it to me for a look.
i was draining the crankcase expecting 2 quarts of oil to hit my small
drain pan....i felt like the monkey trying to put the cork back in...
ultimately we got about 6-8 quarts out of his little suzuki. <G>

Some endurance racing Jaguars had oil sumps that held 10 quarts. I
thought *all*
Jaguars held 10 quarts, so I bought 10 quarts when I went to do the
first oil change on my own Jag.

I managed to get about 7 quarts in there before it started overflowing
out the dipstick hole...

My XK120MC held 12 quarts, if memory serves.  I thought all the Jag I6
engines did!
