Got all excited today as I just registered my 94 Virago today but when I went to
start it the battery was dead :-( . I opened the battery
compartment in hopes of hooking it up to the truck with booster cables and all
you can get at is the neg. battery post. Is there a way to use
cables on it or do you have to also figure out how to remove the battery to
charge it. The owners manual doesn't help as it says you may have to
remove the battery but doesn't say how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.

Be glad you failed to jump that sickle with a truck. That battery could've
exploded. Don't do it.
It's likely you left the ignition lock in the wrong position and ran the
battery down. Aim it downhill in neutral with the key in the 'on' position.
Get it rolling good and jump on and downshift to first. Ride it 30 miles.
When you park it, make sure you're in Lock by wiggling handlebars.

I forgot to add, yeah the electrical pressure (aka voltage) from a 12v
truck battery is so much more than the same from your puny little 12V
'sickle battery. It's 'splosive I tell ya...

Oh no, you re-started the Jump-Start thread! Arrrrgggghhhh!
FWIW I think Fred is right. I've heard the warnings too, but 12v is
12v.

When I was in college--this was years ago, before electric starters--I
lived in an apartment building and the manager lady asked me if I'd
push the bike out to the street every morning before starting it so as
not to disturb the other tenants. Just so happens the building was on
a hill. So I'd start it by coasting down the hill every day.
I found that it's MUCH easier to push-start a bike in 2nd than 1st.
It doesn't take as much torque. If you have it in 1st the rear wheel
skids.
I can start my BMW 800 this way all by myself, straddling the seat.
Put it in 2nd and pull in the clutch. Push it forward to get it
moving at a walking pace. Then let the clutch out just momentarily,
then pull it back in. It's about the same amount of energy as a good
kick-start.
