Since my bike and most I guess don't have kick starters any more, what
are you supposed to do when the battery is too low. I've tried to jump
start my bike a couple of times When I stalled it and it don't seem to
start that way. Could it be because you need to squeeze the clutch for
it to start and you have to let it out to jump start? Will it start with
the clutch released? I would like kick start backup if you know what I mean.

I don't know what you mean by "jump start". What I think it means is you
get jumper cables and connect the dead battery to a charged battery. Let
the dead battery get charged up, then start the bike the usual way.
If you intend to push-start the bike, then you should start with the
clutch squeezed. As the bike rolls down a hill (the best way), let go
the clutch and let the bike's road speed start the engine.
(No, don't push the starter button while push-starting the bike.) (Yes,
I saw someone do that once.)

I do not mean jumping the battery with another battery. I mean jump
starting by pushing it in gear and then poping the clutch. My question
was, will it let you start it that way with the clutch released since
you need to squeeze it to start it with the starter.( there is a switch
on the clutch that prevents starting without squeezing the clutch) Will
it prevent other starting methods like rolling and poping the clutch in
gear? My bike will not start that way so did I not try hard enough? Or
is it impossible?

Me too. Both bikes and cars... :-)

That's normally called bump-starting, at least where I live.

You probably need to be rolling at least five to ten miles per hour when
you let the clutch out, in second gear.

Hi Everyone;
I'm new to this group, but wanted to add my 2 cents.
I recently purchased a 1982 Suzuki GS850 from a guy on eBay (local the the
Cincinnati area). The bike has been running real good and I'm happy with it,
except the starter went out.
I only have to get it rolling about 3-4 MPH in neutral (a little faster on a
slight downlsope when cold), pop it into 1st gear, then release the
clutch -- starts up A-OK.
I've been told that I've got to remove the carbs to gain enough clearance to
remove the starter. Can't afford to pay a dealer, and don't have the space
to work on it myself (parked in a underground garage, downtown
Cincinnati)... so I guess it's push-starting for a while.
