I can get a used 2003 Suzuki Marauder with 5000 km for $3300 or a new
Yamaha Virago for $1000 more. (Canadian dollars, before taxes).
I tried out the Marauder briefly on a driveway - seems ok except for
engine vibration (not surprising for a thumper). I don't know how
a Virago handles as I've never test driven one, but found a lot
of favourable reviews.
Any thoughts appreciated. I arranged to phone the Marauder guy
tomorrow morning to let him know what I decided.

The Marauder is not a thumper.. its a twin. Maybe you looked at a Savage
which is a thumper (650). If he said its a Marauder and its a thumper then
buy the Virago.

Here in Canada the Marauder 250 is a single cyl, although it seems
to have twin exhaust ports and pipes merging into a single muffler.
Suzuki Canada's web site says:
The 2005 Suzuki Marauder 250
Authentic cruiser style. The Marauder 250 has a long, low
chassis for precise easy handling. The deeply cushioned
seat and forward-mounted footpegs provide a comfortable
seating position. A compact, lightweight 249cc single-
cylinder air-cooled four-stroke engine delivers strong low-
to-mid range power...

Looks like it's a restyled GN250 engine. Actually, the whole bike looks like
a restyled GN250. Not good....

In the US, it's sold as the GZ250. OK for low speed riding in town,
utterly unsuited to freeways. If you are going to get a 250, the only
one that can do more than low to moderate speed riding is the EX250
(250 Ninja).
