Hey guys,
I’m taking my road test tomorrow. I’ve had my permit for a little
over a month now, and have some previous riding experience, but not
much. I feel completely comfortable riding, and haven’t had any
serious foul-ups :: knocks on wood :: I’m getting a little nervous
and don’t know what quite to expect. I spoke w/ the local cigar shop
owner, and he took his test back in the 80’s, and said he had to do an
emergency side stop. Like where he had to skid the back tire and
swing the bike up sideways. I got out in the parking lot a few
minutes ago and gave it a shot, but can’t seem to get it down. I get
close, but i can’t get it to turn a complet 90 degrees
Anyone have any advice on this. I don’t know if it still exists in
the test or not. But what other types of things can i expect on the
test tomorrow.
I’m riding my "new" ’84 Honda CB 700
thanks guys,
wish me luck
Jeff

First of all, Don't Panic!
Second, what state are you in? Tests vary, and you need to know what your
state requires.
Third, failing on the first try isn't Doomsday. Don't Panic!
Fourth, be as at ease as you can when you meet your inspector. Make your
inspector feel at ease with you, by your subdued confidence. Give your
inspector every chance to believe that any glitches were due to roads,
weather, the motorcycle, etc., but not you.
Fifth, be confident but not arrogant.
Sixth, ride your bike as you already have. Don't try something different
just because you think the inspector might expect it. If you pass, then
great! If you don't, then they'll let you know where you need improvement.
Seventh, be polite. A small smile or a "Thank you" can go a long ways to
covering up little deficiencies. And never blame the inspector.
Eighth, make sure your bike is in top condition and that you can find
neutral at any time. Neutral is your best friend!
Ninth, keep your mouth shut as much as possible except to smile or answer
questions. Make your inspector believe that you're a serious biker, not
just a soccermom on two wheels.
Tenth, turn off your cell phone or leave it at home. The most important
thing today is passing the test, not that Jason got a black-eye playing
football. You can check your messages later.
Hope this helps.
Best,
doc

No matter WHAT, everytime something not-good happens, just give your
tester a big grin and say something like 'Heh heh...these here cycles
are jes like a box full of kittens.' Then, once you're back upright
again, blip the throttle a couple of times and say 'What's next,
captain??'.

Like he's taking the piss, blowing smoke op your arse or simply lying
through his teeth. I dont think I've EVER heard so much bollocks when it
comes to motorcycles.

Just as well, because IF you did that on your test, you'd probably be
walking home from the test centre as they'd insist you never rode a bike on
the street.

Yeah, forget it. Learn to stop in a straight line as quickly as possible
with ZERO skidding. Skidding means you're NOT slowing down as qickly as you
can. (Ever heard of ABS?)

I'm sorry to say this, but I fear you left it just a "touch" too late to be
asking those type of questions.
Good luck

Here in Michigan we also have to do:
1) The "slide and recover" under a 3 foot high barrier, like when you have
to slide the bike under a semi that has just pulled out in front of you, and
then bring the bike upright again without stopping.
2) A wheelie from both a full stop and rolling start at 20mph.
3) Jump off a 4 foot ramp at sufficient speed to clear 12 feet of pavement.
