A guy walks into a bar wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey and
carrying a cat that also has a Cowboys jersey on with a
little helmet on his head, too.

The guy says to the bartender, "Can my cat and I watch the
Cowboys game here?
My TV at home is broke, and my cat and I always watch the
game together."

The bartender replies, "Normally, cats wouldn't be allowed
in the bar, but it's not very busy in here right now, so you
and the cat can have a seat at the end of the bar. But, if
there's any trouble with you or the cat, I'll have to ask
you to leave" The guy agrees, and he and his cat start
watching the game.

Pretty soon the Cowboys kick a field goal and the cat jumps
up on the bar and struts around. Everyone is amazed!
Eventually the Cowboys score, winning the game. The excited
cat jumps on the bar, does a dance and gives everyone a high
five. The bartender says, "Hey, that's pretty cool! What
does he do when they win a playoff game?"

The guys answers, "I don't know, I've only had him for 12 years.

I was thinking about how often one would expect an average team to win
a playoff game.

It seems to me that a maximum of 8 teams can win at least one playoff
game in any year (that's assuming the winners of each division beat
the winning wild card team). So if every team took turns, then it
would be 4 years for all 32 teams to each win one game.

However, if all division champions always lost their first game, then
only 4 teams would win their first playoff game in a given year. Thus,
teams would average at least 8 years between playoff victories.

If the wild card team wins half the time in the divisional game, then
6 teams would win their first game, on average. 32 / 6 = 5 1/3, so in
a league where every team was perfectly equal, they would average 5
1/3 years between playoff victories.

So, yes, 12 years is a bit of a long time.
