1) It seems like a half helmet, like a Skid Lid or a little bigger,
would be more comfortable, I conclude that people don't wear them too
much because they aren't as safe as helmets that come down to one's
neck. Is that so? Would you wear a half-helmet, and if you think
they are more dangerous, how much more? :)
2) Some of the full face and modular helmets have a very funny chin,
sticking out like Jay Leno after he played football. Is that only a
matter of style? I think I'd be embarrassed to wear one because it
looks like I'm trying to look cool, and I'm too old for that. Is
there a purpose to that strange chin shape?
( I do want to get a helmet that is brightly colored so people will
see me.)
3) Some helments come with transparent visors like the brim of a cap.
I would think they are meant to be like awnings to keep the sun out of
my eyes, except they are transparent. What is their purpose? Do
you use one? I thought I would just wear sunglasses if it is too
sunny, under the regular face shield if I have a full face helmet.
4) Maybe I'd be happy with a helmet, half height or full height, that
didn't have a face shield. I don't plan to ride on the expressway
much (I'm too scared.) and I don't plan to go over 45 mph. All that
maryland requires is a DOT helmet and some eye protection like
glasses. Do I need the face shield?
Thanks a lot.

Snell certification is what you need to look for.

Maybe. There are conflicting articles about Snell v. DOT.
One thing for sure. With a half-helmet, your face is in danger. I once
hit a deer at 65+ mph, was launched over the handlebar and landed on my
chin and knees. That would be the chin of the full-face helmet. Without
that, I would have been looking for a new face.
And regarding the face shield: ever catch a June bug at 45 mph? On the
lip?

Actually, I've never caught a June bug at all. Do you think using my
lip would help?
Just kidding. I get your point. Thanks.

Would you care to elaborate on this? Ive not heard of any
conflics except that dot was not as stringent in testing.
