It isn't just movies that can have that effect. Our local CHP guys used to
brace themselves for the weekend of the Times Grand Prix at Riverside
Raceway. They had come to expect a bunch of guys to crash their sports cars
on the way home from the race, and they were rarely disappointed. (This was
probably caused not just by the adrenaline pumping through the spectator's
veins after the race and an irresistible urge to play at being Dan Gurney,
but also by an astronomical blood alcohol level.)

One memorable year there were three sports cars wiped out in separate
crashes on a one-mile stretch of Pigeon Pass Road, and it turned out that I
knew all three drivers!

I knew this critter from New Joisey, who sold little Nascar models and
followed Nascar. Mind you, her face was scarred and her leg, from two
separate auto accidents that she claimed weren't her fault.

Anyway, she thought she was a hot-shit driver because she watched so
many Nascar races. Guess she thought driving skills would just seep into
her skull through osmosis or something.

I went somewhere with her. Once. The bitch drove no less than 90mph,
wove through traffic on the freeway like a total idiot, and I had
cramped hands from clutching the seat. (to avoid adding to her facial
scarring) People like that should have their licenses permanently
yanked, and their cars squished into a cube before their eyes.
