Hi everyone. I’ll be buying my first bike later this week and have
been trying to research what riding gear I should get. I was
wondering if anyone could help me make the best choice on a couple of
items. This is what I have narrowed my options down to:
HELMET:
HJC AC-11
Shoei TZ-R
JACKET:
Joe Rocket Atomic 2.0 Jacket
Joe Rocket Meteor 5.0 Jacket
GLOVES:
Joe Rocket Ballistic 5.0 Gloves
BOOTS/SHOES:
Alpinestars CR-1 Shoes
Joe Rocket Orbit Boots
Joe Rocket Atomic Shoes
Of course, I’m trying to keep my costs down as much as possible but I
still want to get good gear. Also, any thoughts on what type of spare
shield to get (for bright days and such)? Thanks for the help!

which one fits your head better? have the shop folks help you find the best
fit. it may not be one of these helmets, so keep your mind open. wear the
thing around for at least 15-20 minutes before buying. yes, you'll feel
like a dork. deal with it. :-)

couldn't tell you about their new stuff, but my joe rocket experience has
been that their leather holds up well and their textile not so much. i
highly recommend first gear.

get boots. period. you want something that covers your entire ankle and
comes up your calf. watch discovery healty chanel a couple of times to find
out why.

your helmet manufacturer will have specific shields for your helmet, ask at
the shop.
good luck and have fun!

Seconded. I'm getting more and more unhappy with my JR 3.0 from a few
years ago. Worst $300 I ever spent, bike-wise.
I'm looking at Brosh (www.brosh.com) as a possible replacement, but so
far I haven't been completely happy with some of the smaller things
I've
tried from their website (helmet liner, shoe protector, do-rag), so I'm
not sure how much I'll like their jackets. I *am* going to get a pair
of their armored, kevlar-lined jeans, though.

Different folks have different results. I road tested a JR Ballistic
jacket back in May and it performed admirably, I only wish that I had
been wearing the pants too. Jeans are no substitute! :-(

how long had you had it? mine lasted for a year and a half before literally
falling apart at the seams, no crashing required. longevity is as important
as crashworthiness, IMO.
