How do I determine the size of my rear shock on a 1100 Honda shadows ace. I
was looking at Dennis Kirk and they had a few for my bike but they had sizes
like 11.5 or 11 inch? Or does that number determine the stiffnes of the
shock

Extend the shock absorber completely by lifting the rear fender up and
measure.
The distance between shock mounting bolts is 11.0, 11.5, 12.0 and on
and on up to about 20 inches long, in the case of a monoshock like
Yamaha motocrossers used.
You really have to know a lot about shocks and springs and calculate
the mechanical advantage of the swing arm/linkage before you go
spending money on aftermarket shocks and springs or you are just
wasting time and money.
One thing you need to know is what the stock spring rate in pounds per
inch of compression is.
There are spring rate calculators on the web, you just have to google
for them and measure your own spring and then do some research on the
aftermarket shock manufacturer's website to find out what the spring
rate on their shock is.
If you had a sportbike, you could get a lot of information from
www.racetech.com
The Progressive spring website might have some useful information too.
