Hi guys:
I've been looking at a LS650 Suzuki (yes I'm still looking at it guys) but
I'm still wondering what other bikes are out there that would be a good
beginner bike for me. I'm 6'2" and 47 years old. I road bikes when I was a
teen ager. I had a 1971 Yamaha 125 enduro. So you can see I'm not a total
beginner when it comes to riding but I have no experience on the road, so you
have to take that into account.
Thanks for your help
Eddie

You are tall enough to handle just about any full sized motorcycle
available. I suggest Suzuki SV650, the Kawasaki EX500 or the Kawasaki
EX650 for a starter bike if you want a twin cylinder machine.
You can get a used SV650 or EX500 in the $3K price range, and I could
have bought an EX650 last Christmas for only $4500 when the owner's
wife got pregnant and he had to sacrifice it.
Or you could buy the Suzuki GSX650 if you want a four cylinder and can
afford the price of the latest machinery. You might also find a GSX600
Katana in good condition in the $3K to $4K range.

Read the whole totalmotorcycle.com website to see what's out there.

And there is nothing wrong with the Savage you are looking at now (newer
models labeled S-40).
It all pretty much comes down to what YOU are comfortable with,
configuration, weight and size wise.
A bigger bike is not necessarily better.
After 40+ years of riding, I settled in with a Suzuki GZ250. That kind of
choice is not for everybody.
I am a fairly small person and (almost) never take to the Interstates.
I suits my needs just fine........including road trips.

What's your inseam? (Everyone forgets to mention inseam. <g>)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_LS650_Savage
".. it has been considered a bike for people under 6 feet tall,"
Most people recommend a standard-style motorcycle for a beginner bike,
and especially for a taller person. If you have an inseam probably over
32", your knees are going to be "under your chin" on those little
cruisers. I'm only 5'10" or so with a 32" inseam, and when I sit on one
of them, I'm very cramped.
I'd actually have to agree with Krusty The Tilde in this case <gasp!>,
and recommend the SV650, or the EX500/650, or any medium-sized Honda
Nighthawk.
Go take the MSF course first.

I bought my first motorcycle last year. It's a 2007 Suzuki M109R. It took a
while to get used to its heft but I love the ride and now I don't have to
spend more money "moving on up."
Note to sane people: Do not try this at home. :^)
