Used but recent Suzuki SV650. The nekkid
version, not the "S".

I should add to that - find the best bike you can
for, say, $4000 (and there are loads of good SVs
out there for that price), then spend the remaining
$1000 on some "touring" farkles - a nice Givi top
case, for instance, mebbe some saddlebags,
upgrade the seat and suspension if that hasn't been
done already, that sorta thing. Great bike for
day touring, a weekend, or even longer.

I would add the Suzuki DL650 V-Strom as well, for all the reasons you list
the SV. Both great bikes. I'm steering a friend towards either bike right
now. He's signed up for MSF and is shopping around. There are a lot of 1 to
3 year old bikes out there that have been farkled out, are reasonably low
mileage, and around the 3500 to 4500 range. Side and top-case examples are
usually a 500 or so more than stock. Depends.
