Was looking to build one out of maybe foam, gel and fabric but no luck
getting anything cheap.
Any good buys on one that sits on top of the bike with friction surface to
keep in place.

I just had a friend by one for his wife on an 1,800 mile ride... it
was a tad large for the rear seat, but she LOVED it... maybe 2" - 2
1/2" thick, gel. It has sticky 'bumps' on the bottom side and it
stayed put except for a couple of times she kicked it getting off the
bike.
We found it at a Harley dealer in Eureaka, California, but I'm sure
they are other places too.
Cost: $100.
