My bike all of a sudden started to run poorly on the way home from
work yesterday. Felt like it was missing. When I got off I noticed
fuel dripping. The overflow hose from the left side carb was dripping
steadily. Any idea why this would happen so suddenly?

Sounds like a problem with the float--could be stuck, could have
sprung a leak and sunk, or the float needle could have some crud under
it that's holding it open.

That's the diagnosis I got from a mechanic this morning. He says to
take the fuel line off & spray some carb cleaner directly in the carb.

If that fixes it, it fixes it. If it doesn't, then the carburetor may
have to be rebuilt.

It's easy to say a war is so important your neighbor should go fight it for you.

Perhaps, but I have been successful in just carefully dissassembling the
carbs and then cleaning everything by hand and reassembling with the
original gaskets and o-rings. The usual culprit is the varnish residue
from dried up gasoline in the various fuel passageways and orifices.
Use of the nozzle straw on a can of spray carb cleaner and shooting
through each passageway can do wonders.
Motorcycle carbs can appear intimidating but they are actually pretty
basic appliances once you learn what all the various features are there
for. Which will be important after the carbs are cleaned because you'd
likely have a few adjustments to make.
