Hey all, i am seeking some help. I am a rookie when it comes to
motorcycles and riding. I became interested in bikes over the past
summer and wish to purchase a motortcycle now. I am trying to find a
reasonably priced motorcycle to learn on and gain experience with.
does anyone have suggestions? I am looking for a sports bike such as a
kawaski or yamaha. In addition I was hoping if anyone had any
suggestions to which helmet i should purchase?and do i need to buy a
jacket for protection in case of an accident ( such as road rash)?
Any other reccomnedations for a newbie? Thankyou for your patience and
response to my questions. -NewbfromSC

These questions are asked and answered often here.
Start here:
http://www.timberwoof.com/motorcycle/faq.shtml
There are links for "Choosing", "Training", "Gear", etc. all gathered from
various motorcycle news groups.
Also, try going to Google Groups at http://groups.google.com and typing
rec.motorcycles or alt.motorcycles into the search box. That'll bring up
previous posts here, try entering "new rider" or something similar and click
the "search this group" button, you'll bring up many posts with the
information you need.
Hope this answers your questions, if you have some specific questions ask
again, you'll get lots of opinions and some of them might even be right! ;-)

I smell water, a bridge and possibly a troll.

But a useful one, for me - I have many of the same questions, and the
timberwoof link was a good help.
On that subject - is there an official FAQ for this NG, or is that
timberwoof page pretty much it?

A 250 Ninja would be a good, short term bet. Don't buy anything (like a
Honda Rebel or Shadow) with an extended front end. Buy a bike that's light
and easy to handle.

Any full face DOT helmet should do. I have full face helmets that open into
a 3/4 helmet, but they are noisy.

Yes, don't leave home without one. Buy leather or kevlar pants, good boots
and strong leather gloves.
Let me tell you, when you go down it hurts bad, the less protection you
have, the longer the hurt and the higher the hospital bills.

Get a permit and take an MSF course, without fail.

Good luck, it's dangerous out there.
