My gang is thinking of taking a little road trip and a couple of guys are
wondering about effective cheap bike to bike communications. I'd appreciate
some opinions on what's the best bang for the buck. I assume CB's are still
the method of choice but now I'm dating myself.
Thanks.

We tried using 2 way radios and compact headsets inside the helmets
and it didnt work out so well. The headsets were useless at anything
over 40mph. This was with full face helmets. The pricier comm systems
for bikes may be worth it for you but i have no first hand experience
with them.

I have tried an Autocom intercom system connected to a dirt cheap
two-way radio. It works very well.
The radios did have "vox", which means that transmit is automatically
activated when you talk. The vox must be set so that it does not
trigger from wind and engine noise, but that was quite easy, since the
Autocom is very effective at removing unwanted noises. The radios have
a small delay when they start transmitting, so I have to make some
noise before I start talking, or the first syllable will not be
transmitted.
You can, of course, also rig up a button on your handlebar to activate
the transmitter.
You can also connect a mobile phone to the Autocom. It works just as
well, but may not be the right option here.
I have also tried using the simple headset that came with the radio. I
was unable to get rid of the wind on the microphone.
