How many have experienced trouble being sensed at intersections that
are controlled by a combination of timers and vehicle sensors? I have
been altering most of my routes because if I am the only one at the red
light, on my Honda 750, the light will not turn green. If a car pulls
up next to me, the light will change. I know that many older systems
used a loop sensor, embedded in the pavement to detect a vehicle's
presence. With those systems I can sometimes get them to detect me if I
shift around in the grid, looking for the "sweet-spot". With the
overhead optical sensor I have had no luck. I don't know if they sense
infrared energy, like motion detectors, or if they are ultrasonic? Any
ideas, besides get a bigger bike?

If a sensor does not see your bike the sensor is out of adjustment --
inform the agency responsible, document doing so as evidence for
if/when you get cited for running the malfunctioning signal.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to report a malfunctioning
light sensor on my way to work in the wee hours of the morning.

I usually just go when it's safe after waiting a reasonable amount of
time.

IN Oregon, traffic fines are a cash cow.  I'm convinced the Judge has

I stopped in and talked to the cops at a neighborhood police station.
Asked them about the problem.  They don't care.  It's just another
ticket to them.  Writing tickets is what they're paid to do.
I asked what my options are.
"Wait for the green."  There is no other option....they don't care.
And if you grow old and die waiting for the green, the write you up for
impeding traffic.

I was stopped for backing up to change lanes so I could turn right.
Didn't get a ticket, but
was informed that I'd been guilty of "illegal backing". Grrrrr!!
