sorry if this is a repost, the original never showed up on my news server
guys,
i passed a group of riders on the interstate today that stopped at the same
stop i did. one of them approached me (nice guy) and said that he saw i had
a new bike (temporary tags) and he noticed (by the sound at that speed - 80
mph) that i was in 6th gear when i passed him. he warned me against using
6th gear saying that it was geared to high and would lug the motor. in all
fairness i weigh 185# on a stock dyna and he was probably 300# on a road
king with a large rider and lots of luggage. i would have dismissed it
based on the weight differences, but i had someone else tell me the same
thing last week.
....perhaps im gullible but i cannot see why harley davidson would put a 6th
gear on my bike if i wasnt supposed to use it. if anybody knows the full
story here, im sure you guys do and i would appreciate your input.
thanks,
...oh, and drinks on the self-appointed gun nut #1.

If you have a 6 speed and are under 200 lbs you are supposed to skip
3rd gear and not use it.
If you are over 200lbs you have to skip 4th gear to use 6th
Shirley we can have another
kickstart

The ony way you're going to lug that bike is if the rpms are very low and the
throttle setting is very high. On a Harley it'll usually let you know when your
doing it too.
