I'm guessing the postal stamp price has not historically kept up with
inflation.

Still seems pretty cheap to me. For less than 50 cents, someone comes
to your house, picks up a letter, and delivers it to your addressee's
house, even if they're on the other side of the country, and usually
inside of a week.

Heh, I recently received a promotional gift of a couple sheets of
pre-printed return address labels. Gave 'em to Jeanne since I never
mail anything. Turns out she doesn't either. Maybe they need to
rethink this a little?
