Well, the repairs & clean-up on the FXR got delayed.  Got the front end
done & dropped it back on the floor since I needed the lift.  Parts I'd ordered
for the Road Glide came in.........
Friday I jacked the Glide up, blocked up the swing arm, lowered the
exhaust, & swapped the right swing arm pivot for a TWR Missing Link Stabilizer.
While it was apart I also yanked the ambient air temp gauge, moved the voltmeter
to that hole, & added an oil temp. gauge above the oil pressure gauge.  While I
was in there I decided to wire my garage door opener to the bike's power &
eliminate the battery.  Maybe I won't have to go back into that fairing for a
while now~
I also made some changes to the way the riders backrest mount to see if
I could make it work better.  Buttoned it all back up yesterday & Linda & I went
to dinner on it.  I was mostly interested in how the oil temp. gauge would work,
& if the backrest was going to be more comfortable.  I wasn't expecting to be
able to tell much about the stabilizer because, to be honest, we're a little
short on twisties & long high speed sweepers down here on the sandbar..........
First 5 - 6 miles I was mostly concerned with the backrest, the oil
temp. gauge, & makin' it to the gas station since I was so low on fuel that when
I hit the brakes it starved the fuel pump.  Made it to the pump (just barely), &
while I was puttin' 51/4 gallons in a 5 gallon tank I realized I haden't been
thinkin' 'bout the handlin'.  Got back on the road & started payin' attention to
how the bike rode.
Damn!  What a surprise!  Payin' attention I could feel a difference even
in a straight line!  The closest thing to a sweeper is a couple of interstate
on-ramps, but they can be high speed.  The first one wasn't impressive, but it
was stable.  The street level turns were more impressive.  I found that I was
more stable & more aggressive in all of 'em.  By the time we got to the
restaurant I was paying more attention to the way the bike was handlin'.  On the
way home I had a few more turns & a right/left "sweeper" at an on-ramp.  The
bike started feelin' like an FXR!  A really big FXR, but an FXR none the less!
The stabilizer adds a little vibration, but not in a bad way.  I feel
the motor more, but it kind of unitizes the bike.  Makes it feel like one
complete machine rather than a collection of parts headed to the same
destination via slightly different routes.
The guy that makes this thing is in Canada & the shoppers on the
hdforums have ganged up & gotten a group buy goin' with him.  I bought mine
before that all happened, so I paid $349.99 & $22 shipping.  That's still about
$90 below the RideSt8 that's pretty much the same thing.  The group buy on
hdforums is $330 total!  Shipping included.  I ain't sellin' 'em, don't make
anything out of it, but thought I'd pass on the info.  I'm impressed with mine,
YMMV.
Oh yeah, the oil temp. gauge worked, & the backrest needs some work,
but's better.

Coming from anyone else but you, I would have given a big bwahahaha.

That's the key; the flexing in hard cornering.
I would never have thought to buy one of these things
based on just "the wobble".  It's not that I don't believe
there's a "hidden wobble", I just believe it more of a
maintenance issue than a mystery.

But you've gotten me sold on something that would enhance the value of
the bike.  "Value" to me isn't in terms of dollars.

TWR Missing Link Stabilizer, next on the list.

bother Tom for that much longer.>

<snip>

If you log on to the hdforums list ignore the horror stories about the
throttle by wire those shoppers are ranting about.  Apparently none of 'em know
where the clutch or kill switch are located.  With the exception of a few, that
bunch is the best shoppers & worst riders I've come across in a long time.

27-34 mpg on what?  Both my bikes (E85 FXSB and 07 FLTR) get 48-50
mpg... well... except the Mrs's Yamaha.  It get 70 mpg... but it's a
650.
