2005 HD Sporster, Carb'd not fuel injection.

I can ride around town all day with absolutely no problems. I can get on
the highway, and she runs fine... until I get off. After going over 55mph
and returning to low speeds, I begin to get a lot of backfires.  As soon
as I stop at a redlight/stopsign, the backfires continue and I can't get
any acceleration over ~5mph.  After turning the bike off and letting it
cool down, I can start back up and ride all over again - unless I bring it
back up to highway speeds.

I've replaced the sparkplugs, completely changed gas, cleaned the carb
(there was no debris in the bowl underneath), cleared all lines.

Anybody have ideas on what could be the cause, and hopefully a solution?

Thanks,
Greg

Do 2005s still have a VOES? Just grasping here, but I'd
check that if you have one. The test procedure is in the manual.

And, if he doesn't have the manual, there's this page from my site
that might help:

Indeed!  P0374 and P0502.   Crank Position Sensor and Vehicle Speed
Sensor High/Open.  I have a CPS on it's way to me as of now, going to
replace that.  Some searching has shown that replacing the CPS will
usually correct the VSS issue also.

Thoughts?

I think you should read the FAQs.
