Back hurts from stooping over all day -- gimme something strong, and a
round for whomever's in the bar today.

Today's project was to swap out the SE mufflers installed by previous
owner for a pair of stock mufflers from an 05 road king.  Swap went
smoothly.  I like working on the Ultra Classic -- it's not so tight
and difficult as the Sportster was.  Everything is larger and further
apart.

The mufflers that came off are 64903-99, looks like first generation
Screamin' Eagles.  I suppose I'll put them on craigslist.  I may go to
more free-flowing mufflers in the future, when I figure out what to do
about the EFI, but I probably wouldn't put these back on.  It's nice
to be able to hear the radio.

It took me about four hours, mostly because I realized after getting
the left side back together that I'd put the clamp on wrong,  (the
little half-moon piece goes outside the clamp, not inside) but also
because I kept getting side-tracked by guts I'd never seen before.
Here's the stem for the air assist, here's the fuse box, these are the
spares, over here must be the computer connector.  In general, just
getting familiar with where everything is.  I've paged through the
shop manual but there's nothing like seeing for yourself.

I sorted out the tools I had used with an idea towards making up a new
tool kit.  Enough of the sizes are different that the kit I had in the
Sportster isn't entirely useful.

BTW, when you have a tour pack and you're taking the seat off, for
God's Sake, put your hand behind the seat and lift carefully so you
don't scratch the front of the pack with the metal fastener.  Lesson
learned.

The guy who sold me the mufflers ($50) also sold me an SE "race
fueler" that looks like it's never been out of the box.  (Also $50.) I
may experiment with that a little later.  I am serious about a K&N air
cleaner, but undecided how radical I want to go.  I had the SE Stage 1
kit on the sportster, and that's a candidate, but the K&N HD-1499
would fit in the current air box without changing the back plate, and
is very affordable, so thinking of going that way.  The Fueler would
go on at the same time, allowing me to richen the mixture a little.
I'm actually a little intrigued by the K&N RK-3910 kit, which is a
full stage one but the element is a half inch wider.  I think it's the
same element that comes stock on the new 110 inch bikes.  But I don't
think one should put in a big element like that without also changing
the exhaust, and I don't want to do that again for awhile.  Not sure
what I'm going to do, just thinking out loud.

But the most rewarding part of today's work was going for a ride
afterwards.  I live literally two blocks from the edge of town, only
one stoplight away from farmland, and there's a lot of nice hills and
wooded areas to explore.  The bike was scary quiet.  I'm usually the
guy setting off car alarms, going clear back to Japanese bikes in the
eighties with heavily modified exhausts, and this is definitely a
different thing.  It's.... nice.  I guess I am a geezer now.

Based on just an hour or so, it seems like there's less on the high
end but more on the low end.  It didn't backfire once, which is very
good.  I'll ride it more tomorrow and then check the plugs.
