I have blown my shovel teflon head gasket (1980 FLH 80) within 3000 miles after
it had been replaced. Is there something I could have done to cause this, could
it have been mounted badly or is it plain F%^$#@! bad luck?

Did you or someone else replace it? Was it torqued correctly?
Are the head & barrel surfaces smooth & unmarred?

Hey Jinks,
I am not patient enough with iron so leave it to the local Harley Dealer to do
the major work. I haven't seen the surfaces, but I suppose I should be able to
rely on their craftmanship. Even though their mechanics are human too...
In other words you mean: if it has been badly mounted (surfaces not smooth) that
could be the cause?
I'll have to wait until they take it apart in a five weeks time.

No, I mean relying on dealerships is a crap shoot. Yeah,
their mechanics are human, but it ain't their bike. It's just another
piece of crap they gotta fix while some supervisor chews their ass or
distracts 'em. Result is; were all the head bolts torqued correctly?;
are there scratches or gouges in the gasket surfaces that should have
been repaired?; was the gasket damaged but used anyway?; etc. etc.
Not all shops are bad, but I'm always cautious when someone
else works on my machines.......YMMV

Personally, I surprised that a dealrship does work on Shovels any more.
Doesn't appear like he's going to do any wrenching on it, so I'd first
ask them to see if it's under any kind of warranty.
If not, then he should yank it apart himself to see first hand, if
he's got the tools.
