Brakes , and Say What !?!

  So I decided to replace the brake pads , since the right outboard one has
separated (see my post & pic over at abpmh) from the backing plate . When I
tried to put the right side caliper back on the bike , it wouldn't go back
on with a new inboard pad mounted . Finally got it to slide back on with a
used pad mounted , and took it down to the gas station to fill up . Got home
and the right side rotor was way hotter than the left .
 I start checking things , and notice the left caliper has a pretty good gap
between the fork tab and the caliper body , but the right side is tight up
against the tab . Now that just ain't right , especially since the left has
a new inboard pad and the right has a used one .
  It turns out the wheel isn't centered between the fork legs , and the only
thing it can be is that someone has replaced the speedo drive with the wrong
unit since it's what positions the wheel - and there's no p/n on it to check
. After adding a .150" spacer to the left side , the wheel is centered , and
the brakes are no longer dragging . BTW , my first thought was the forks
have worn bushings , and that the fender was pushing them apart , so I
pulled the fender to check that , and if anything it would pull them
together since jthere's a small gap when it's held between the mounting
bosses . With the new spacer , the rotors are both exactly an inch from the
inside face of the forks where the bolt goes thru .
  This also explains why the bike has always tended to drift right if I take
my hands off the bars no matter what I do - the only way I could get it to
track straight is to lean way to the left ... Looks like I'll be doing a
motor/tranny alignment soon , since it was aligned with the wheel off center
, even though it was only a hair over an eighth of an inch . But that's
going to have to wait until the temps get below a hundred degrees !
