35K on a 2005 Electra Glide. Figured it was about time for the cam
tensioners to shoot craps, so I took it apart.
Good news. The shoes weren't bad at all. (Pictures next door when I'm
done here.) Prolly coulda let 'em go, but I decided to replace 'em
anyway "just in case."
Bad news. Inner cam bearings were bad and they gobbled up the ends of
the cams. (Pictures next door.)
Good news. I found that they were bad while it was in the shop, not
while I was out on the road somewhere.
Bad news. Gotta call the CFO and tell her I need to spend a little more
than I had budgeted.
Good news. She isn't going to shoot me with a bazooka. In fact, she
hardly flinched when I told her. *I* flinched when I told her, but
that's just a survival instinct.
Waiting now for an oil pump pressure relief spring, which should be here
by Friday. Why, oh why, didn't I order it before? Now I gotta let the
bike sit in my shop with her innards hanging out all over.
I bought SE-203's. I know that if you ask 10 people which cam is best,
you'll get 11 different answers, but it seems that the 203's have a
little more grunt at the low end. I don't do any hot-rodding, so they
oughta be fine for me.

I got my engine build by telling the wife that the INA bearings on the cam
had a rep of letting go around 25k. And sure enough her Uncle was setting
along side the road on his 92, it let go at 29K. So at 25K I got a new cam.
Then a friend coming back from vacation had a bottom jug gasket leak on his
95. I told my wife that ours could do that to the stock gaskets were junk.
Well, out with the stock pistons and in with the new 10:1 wisco to match the
Crane H-286-2b. So all worked out good for me too!

I put 203's in mine when it was a 95". It's got 103" and SE-258 cams now.
Thought about going without chains but it was pretty new technology then. Wonder
how they're working out.

Going with gear drive cams, or perhaps the new hydraulic tensioners will
be something for down the road for me. I would like the engine to be as
bullet proof as a Chevy small block. Just change the oil regularly, jump
on and ride season after season. Eliminating those tensioners would be
the first step.
