It's not loose on the shaft.
How about, does you bike KlunK loudly when shifting into first? Mine
does. Compared to the '07 Ultra I can barely tell when I shift into
first on the '01 FXST. Very smooth by comparison.
Maybe the clutch needs adjusted. Did that to the FXST after about 10K
and it seemed to make a difference in that respect.

My shift lever doesn't rattle. It shakes but doesn't rattle.

So does mine on my '07 and my clutch is adjusted just fine.

It is loose on the shaft. Tighten it per spec, or you will go to
downshift coming to a redlight outside Lake Jackson Texas and the lever
will go below the floorboard.
Er, or so I'm told, not that I would ignore a loose fastener on my bike,
not me.
Really, though, if the front lever is bouncing and the rear isn't (my
symptom), it's loose, even though it doesn't feel like it. Get out the
wrench and tighten the hell out of it.

It'll loosen up, if you take it out of the garage. Mine still has a
pretty good clunk, but not as much as when new.

No rear lever. But I'll torque it just the same. That spec *is* in the
manual?

LOL. I broke 5K on the SNIFF trip.
Shirley, Woodfords for the advisers.

Primary chain is too loose. Really.
