Hullo, been a while since I've dropped out of lurk mode, belly up and grab a
splash of what-have-you whilst I pose you this puzzler.

It may just be pilot error, I dunno, this is why I'm seeking the wisdom of
the bar.

The bike is a '90 softail, I'm babysitting it for my bud while he's in
Afghanistan.  It had the original ignition switch, the bar type, and it was
getting flaky, cutting out at speed and making the occasional misfire.  I've
cleaned up the one on my shovel a couple times when it's started skipping
beats, not a big deal, but I decided to treat both my bike and his to new
style ones from JP.

Now here's the wierd part:  When the old switch was still on his bike and I
started the bike, I turn the key to run, start it, then turn on the
headlight, just like I've started bikes for twenty-odd years.  His bike
would cut out when I turned on the headlight.  That was with the old switch.
Well danged if it doesn't do it with the _new_ switch in there, too.  When I
switch from Run to Headlight the motor farts and sez goodnight.  A starter
button push later and she's happy-slappy.  My Shovel hasn't complained once
in the two years I've ridden it, the only obvious difference I can see is
that the Shovel still sports points.  Is this something with the electronic
ignition that I don't know about?  Is it something Evos just do, or what?
Back in the day I learned to start bikes with the headlight off so that the
engine gets aaalll the juice for startup, is this just me being a dinosaur,
using kickstart era conventional wisdom in a sleek, push button world?

I'm a puzzled lad.  The Shovel is the first push-button starting bike I've
ever owned and that's only been two years, and now, eGads, electronic
ignition to deal with.  The pace of modern technology is frightening at
times.  What's next, fuel injection with a narrow band O2 sensor!?!

As an aside, do two bikes constitute a fleet?

Slurp'em up fast, the cards running thin on 'available credit'.

Is 3 bikes a fleet if two of 'em don't run?

Lynn's evo has the old style bar switch on it and while it will miss a
couple of licks as you move the switch, it won't cut off
completely(until the bar on the switch gets dirty again).  I usually
kinda rock the switch in position as I move it, just to make sure it
gets contact.
My Shovel FLT doesn't miss a lick when you move the switch to the
light position(well it didn't before I scattered it all over the shop,
I don't believe that'll change when I get her together again).

I was kinda only counting running machines, since I've got 2, 7, 10 or 11
bikes depending on if you count'em by Ridable, Titles, Frames or Engines.
Count'em however you desire until you get the answer you want, math is
flexible that way, just ask a statistician.

Well, you've answered the question, Evos 'do that'.  One thing I left out is
that I _think_ my buddy had straight 60 wt. oil in'er, I've been meaning to
ask him about that.  I swapped in 20w-50 and a new filter yesterday, maybe
she'll keep ticking through the switch-over now like yours.  Maybe she'll
start a littler easier, too.  I'll find out today.

Must be that a minor power glitch to the stock electronicable ignition
module causes a reboot and it takes a second for the brain to wake up and
remember where it is.  Interesting.  Makes me wonder if popping a capacitor,
like maybe an old Shovel condenser, on the power supply side of the module
would carry the module through the hiccup.  Might cause other problems
though?  Any electronics wizards reading this?

Stupid add-on story time:  I was talking to an Airbus pilot once about the
software that runs the plane.  He said you could tell how long a pilot had
been flying Airbuses based on thier reaction when the control system started
to 'flutter' the control surfaces during autopilot controlled decents,
making the plane sort of chatter.  Less than 6 months:  "What is it
doing!?!"  Less than two years, "It's doing it again!"  Over two years, "It
does that."

Prost!

My '76 Shovelhead did that with the original switch, but since the chrome
cover was not in good shape either, I bought a new switch from J&P.    It
will miss a beat but keep running, unless I'm really slow turning the
switch.  Must be some advantage to low tech (points/condenser), just wish
both plugs didn't fire at the same time.
