My plastic is on the bar for all in here its been a couple of years at
least since my last post.
I moved to Jervis Bay Australia from the UK about 30 months ago and
have been busy settling in.
I brought my 86 Heritage with me which brings me to the reason for
this post.
Its pretty much stock except for a headquarters rumble stick cam
(HQ-0024) and single fire ignition, S&S E carb, and V&H longshots.
My problem is that with baffles in I can't use over 50% throttle
without it feeling like the biggest miss you ever saw. Take the
baffles out it pulls like a train. Swap over to stock pipes with
baffles it pulls like a train.
I've tried bigger and smaller jets, checked the electrics and timing
and for inlet and exhaust leaks.
I've come to the conclusion that my longshots are too long for my
setup and that any backpressure brought by the baffle is sending the
exhaust gas back into the cylinder causing what feels like a major
missfire. Its so bad I cant use more than half throttle. I also see a
mist of gas from the carb when starting.
A double shot of Crown Royal ( or whatever yer poison is) for anyone
with a useful suggestion.
Hey Aitch if you read this ping me at bill+jenni@bigpond.com i'd like
to catch up with ya.

It seems you already know the answer. You tried your stock and it was
fine and it runs with the baffles out of the V&H fine. So leave them
out, or run a different exhaust. If your wanting to deaden the sound a bit
try the washer trick in the V&H.
I did this in a friends Samsons and gained a decent bottom end back and that
stupid blap sound.

I was going to say that the cam had a lot of overlap and was therefore
more sensitive to exhaust, I'm glad I checked first and didn't step on
my delta. Some times I have found the MasterCamSpecs sheet to be in
error, the numbers given are,
IO-20 IC-36 EO-52 EC-19 ID-236 ED-251 Overlap-39
This is a mild bolt in cam and should not be overly sensitive to
exhaust. By any chance are those pipes fat? If the diameter of the pipe
is large that will screw with exhaust flow. Curious, usually the
complaints are found with baffles removed....
The washer trick.

These guys will separate you from some cash and may provide a solution

Need more data to try an understand exactly what is happening. The fuel
standoff at the carb is a definite clue that it is an exhaust/cam issue.
Is it possible you have a different cam than you say? Or have a cam that
is mis-marked? Or the specs I found are inaccurate? Gotta cam card?

I have a friend with the V&H long shots. I posted a picture next door a
couple days back of it. With my advice he is having the Head Quarters HQ-24
put in while having the INA bearings taken out.
My friends baffles are out and he has no intentions of putting them in. The
exhaust sounds good with them out. They have a nice deep sound. Marty lives
down the hill from me and I always know when he is coming home, it sounds
nice, not to loud but not to quiet either.
I went with this baffle in my drag pipes they took more of the edge off than
the washer but there not cheap either.
