Okay,

New to the world of motorcycles, but have completed MSF and have some
limited riding history on off road machines. So, looking into buying a
bike, primarily for recreation use, the idea of something challenging
and fun and also with  the idea that motorcycling is something you
NEVER stop learning new things about (skills wise). I've heard
constantly that the first bike you get should be something small and
the oft repeated quote "You will drop your first bike". But, I've also
heard from very experienced riders that you should buy the biggest
bike you can comfortable handle, and, one good friend, who is a BMW
sportbike riders of over 20 years (and has got his 1200 up to 190 in
the Nevada desert), told me that "You should never plan to drop a
bike". Toughts on this?

Seems to me that with discipline and respect, you should get what you
can handle and go from there. It seems to me that since motorcycling
well is such a combination of physical, and mental coordination that
attitude WOULD play a part in this, so should you "Plan" on dropping a
bike? Seems counterintuitive, and I don't want to get a Sportster and
be looking to resell after a year. Also not looking to get a Hyabusa
or some insane tuner designed for doing the aforementioned 190 through
the desert. I'm over 30, 6'1 and about 230lbs.

Thinking I don't get the point of "planning" to wreck anything. What's
the consensus?

Thx for considering this.....

BD.

Sorry Ladies and Gents,

Please, allow me to buy a round for the group, and my appologies for
breaking ettiquette ;-)

Thanks for schoolin' me Al.

I'm BD, and I appreciate the opportunity to get some good advice, and
hopefully one day, be around the horn enough to offer my own.

Not interested in the burner vs. Harley discussion, more interested in
getting opinions on first bikes, and what's too much vs. what's not
enough, I'm sure it's an off asked question,  but I wouldn't be asking
if I didn't think y'all were the ones who could give me the best
answer, and the other posts I've read never addressed the whole
"should you really plan to wreckj your first bike...." question.

Looking at a used FXR actually.

I'm complaining the MoCo doesn't make the FXR anymore.
A 1990 FXRS-SP, the best handling big twin I owned.
Wish I never sold it. (another complaint)
