I'm looking at a 89 Sportster w/ 18,000 miles on it that a fella is
selling for $2500.  It seems to run well, though it needs to be
cleaned up and buffed out.  He put some drag pipes on it, but other
than that everything is stock. Is this a good deal?  Is there anything
I should be aware of as a first-time buyer about that era of the
Sportster?  I'd like to take whatever I get on road trips.  Will this
one vibrate me to pieces on a road trip?  Thanks.

A few things to think about;

How tall are you and how comfortable do you feel on the Sprotster (sitting
in riding position)?

That "era" is fine - you might want to ask if it's been dropped, down or
wipedout on.

If it were me, I'd look around for a Big Twin of similar vintage. A Dyna
Glide is going to be something that you can keep for a long time as both an
around town and touring machine. The fact is a Sporty is going to vibrate
significantly more than a Big Twin. It doesn't bother some folks but others
find it very uncomfortable. I think it has a lot to do with your age and
physical condition.
When I was 22, I put many thouands of hiway miles on an old Triumph
Bonneville. If I had to do 500 miles on one of those things today at 50, I'd
need a spine transplant.
Even if you need to spend a little more, I believe it's worth it to invest
in a bigger, more substantial bike.
Might be a good idea to ask if you can take the Sporty on a 100 mie test
ride just to see if it fits you. I'm a fairly normal sized man and Sporty's
feel very small to me. Next to a Big Twin, they feel like a mini bike.
They are quick and nimble by comparison however.
Just my humble opinion. You may buy it and find it adequate.
