this is only for Georgia at this time
but a state law is going into effect on UM coverage changes
we now have UE along with UM UE being extended coverage (which costs
you more)
pay attention to your policies, read them and price them out
basically said
there is now standard um like we currently have in Georgia and UE
Say you have 50/100/25 UM
I actually lowered my property UM to 25 (the last number) because none
of my bikes are worth more than 25k and you can not collect more than
they are worth and it saved me money
anyhow 50/100/25 um protects you to 50k for under or un-insured
motorists like we all know (if you don't you haven't been here long)
the numbers work like this
the at fault driver has 25k liability their ins pays up to that 25k
liability limit , your 50k um will cover up to 50k UM limit, but only
pays 25k the difference between your UM and their liability -
if they had no ins coverage your UM would pay up to your 50k limit
(which is great as we know and how it should be)
now we in GA. have a new option UE un/underinsured Extended coverage
which works like this
at fault driver has 25k liability, you have opted for the UE at your
same level of 50k you can now collect up to 75k between BOTH policies
the at fault drivers policy pays their limit of 25k and now your _UE_
pays to your max of 50k. get it?
BE warned! and check those prices!!
my policy would had gone up 41 dollars ever 6 month for the UE over
the UM at my current limits
lets still use 50/100/25 um as a example ok
in order for you to have 50k of um you MUST carry 50k in liability
coverage, you cannot buy UM for more than you are willing to buy
liability coverage for (one of my pet peeves)
anyhow raising your UM to UE ONLY gives you a little more coverage IF
the other party does not have coverage to your new UE limit as
exampled
BUT being the brainiac I am with insurance, I priced checked higher
liability coverage to raise my UM along with it and found it was about
4 dollars every six months LESS to raise all my liability policies
(lets just say now I have 100/300/25) and it cost me LESS than it
would had to get UE
I now can collect 100k UM regardless of what the other driver has
raising my limit to 100k so say the at fault only had 25k liability I
can now collect that 25k plus my collect on UM up to my limit of 100k
make sense? what it is doing is giving me 25k MORE Than I can get max
from the UE policy for less money than adding the UE by raising me
liability protecting others from me a little bit better and at the
same time protecting me from others far better!
keep in mind in Georgia all you insurance policies if with the same
company are stacked, (we have 6 vehicles) unli9ke in FLORIDA where you
actually have to add stacked UM

cool, you can pass it along to your family here, I know of one that
got caught up by it already, I thought it funny we can actually
raise our liability and UM cheaper than just raising to the UE, but
leaving everything as is still the same price.
