Got an issue? Get a tissue.

C-note on the bar. 1st techs ordering get the scotch-du-jour.

Been riding around a bit lately and 2 unrelated problems have come up. ('06
Ultra, 16+k miles) 1st one which I'm hoping for a little info is a leaking,
almost bleeding cam cover (gasket I assume). At times, it's actually a light
stream and the oil usage is quantifiable. To get at the cam cover, I need to
pull the front exhaust pipe. Question, is the oil level below the bottom of
the cover or do I need to drain the case before changing the gasket? I just
changed the oil last Tuesday. The leak started a month or so ago. Also, any
idea why a leak like this would get started? If the oil blow by line was
clogged, could enough pressure build up in the case to start a leak like
that?

2nd, I blew the accessory fuse riding to Vermouth last weekend. No turn
sigs, horn, speedo, tach. Replaced the fuse. Rode 1,000 miles+- last few
days. Blew another (accessory) yesterday morning in Maine with the Banker.
Both times, it appears to have blown on the 1st start-up of the day. That's
the only commonality I can figure. I know electrical gremlins can be the
devil to fix but I'd glady take any suggestions. In fact, I'd gladly pay you
Tuesday for a hamburger today.

Much appreciation from the tech geniuses. Gonna do a write-up on the last 3
days ride with Banker. Was a most excellent journey through the backwoods of
northern New England.

Kinda early for a scotch, that'l make for a long day, may I substitute
a froo froo coffee drink?

Have you checked the cover bolts for tight? I've been told you can get
only the front pipe off by stealer wrenches, but I don't see how
without being brutal. Maybe with the right muffler off and everything
loose.

Did you have a gear drive installed a month ago, and someone ground too
much off the inside of the cover? 06 has no cam sensor so that's not
it. It seems to me there area a lot of other places it would leak oil
first if the vent was plugged (like blow the oil cap off). But anything
is possible.

Now how could the breather line get clogged? A breather line should be
as short as possible. It should be of a suitable material. It should be
routed in a fashion that keeps it going down hill all the way and have
no kinks. Lastly it should not have any filter devices (all they do is
store oil to drip later and or plug up with dirt (if you are an off
roader) and trap moisture when bathed) if your check valves are working
properly no air is drawn into the vent line thus no filter is needed.
Start your motor and stick the end of a clear hose connected to your
vent in your morning cup of coffee and you will see only bubbles not
coffee in the hose

Mmmmmmmm  Hamburger! Charbroiled? Oh, sorry I got distracted there.

Sadly this is going to be the hardest to diagnose. First place to look
is, what non-stock items have been added to the accy circuit
(vest/glove heaters, GPS, silly lights, stereo, refrigeration unit for
tourpac)? Second area is any place that has been worked on recently
(tank off? Fairing apart? etc.) If you have not found the problem yet
do not dispair, perform a wiggle test. (note - before starting wiggle
test obtain an adequate number of spare fuses) wiggle all wires and
harnesses that you can get to without taking anything apart (if you
take stuff apart you may "fix" the problem without knowing it), monitor
the fuse during this test and see if you can make it blow. If you
haven't found the problem yet give your keys to Shirley and have her
bring a second bottle of Scotch. Basically you are going to have to
live with it until it gets bad enough you can cause the fuse to blow
and thus find the culprit or you can disassemble the bike until you
find a pinch or rub (note - if a device internally is causing the
problem disassembly of the bike will not find it). Dr Frankenstein sez
modify a good fuse by soldering a wire to each side of it, connect a
small lamp to these wires. The lamp will provide visual indication that
the fuse has blown and you can then hopefully isolate an event that has
caused it.

Lastly OMG an '06? Trade that sucker in, it's wore out!
Here I'll give you $8 for it.        <sfsf>

Genius? You must mean the others in here, I'm only an Advanced Hack level II.

I look forward to the write up.

Wheew!  Shirley after that I'll need another froo froo,
with a kick this time!

 "Schmoe" ...

I had that fuse blowing on a regular basis until I
discovered the horn was corroded all to hell. Slapped a new
horn on and fuse problem went away.

The fuse would blow when I hit the horn so that might not be
the problem, but it is out there in the elements and more
susceptible to problems than the other items on that
circuit.

DaveN
fuses are currently the least of my problems

Maybe it blew a seal?
