First off, plastic is out..drink up. The scoot (1998 FLSTC) has a starter
issue. Starter turns, but doesn't engage - solenoid? Read through the
service manual and it seems that's the issue. Checked with the local stealer
and cost of hd oem part is $319. I've found some aftermarket starters and
the cost is significantly less by almost two hundred bucks. Looking to the
experts out there for some opinions. OEM vs aftermarket. Your thoughts are
appreciated.
Removal and install seem straight forward, but any suggestions in this area
would be great too.
Understand the bar is open late tonight.....drinks on me.

I gotta agree . Some might call it an "overrunning clutch assembly" .

What the other guys said. Starter clutch, also
known as bendix or over-running clutch.
If you have the skills to r and r the starter,
you also have the skills to open the starter
and replace this part. You can buy the harley
gear for 120 bucks.
