My usenet connection is wonky so not sure when/if this will get out.

Last night finished oil change in Noisy Glide.  Fancy oil filter
remover did *not* work, will not clear hose at lower left of oil
filter.

After messing with it for awhile, including "customizing" a filter
removal tool out of a cap-style remover, I ended up with the old
standby:  Pounded a screwdriver into the side of the old filter,
rotated to remove.

The new filter is a K&N with a bolt head molded into the top.  Spun on
fine, tightened down fine with a socket and extension.  I tell ya, I'm
never again buying an HD filter until they adopt the K&N solution.
It's the greatest thing since sliced milk.

Rode the bike to work this morning, no oil leaks, purring like a
kitten.

The bike seems to be in touring shape.  We're leaving Thursday right
after daughter's school, ultimately to hit Old Sacramento for the jazz
festival.  Afterwards, mom and kid will head north (so kid doesn't
miss school) and me and Noisy Glide will have nearly a week of
unstructured tooling around.  I'm thinking maybe the Napa area,
Redwood highway, up the Oregon coast, cut east at Rockaway.  But
that's just a general idea, may end up doing something else.
Destination isn't important, as long as it's warm and dry.

Daughter says she will be riding down to Sacramento with me, returning
with mom in the bug.  This will be the longest trip she ever made on a
bike.

I'll be taking photos along the way, and hopefully will get a chance
to upload them in the evening.  Probably Facebook and my own website
www.christianfamilywebsite.com.  Ride reports here, select photos in
the Harley photo group.

Hey, it's not Sturgis, but it's a Ride!  on my Bike!

maybe if you did not crank the new filter on so tight..... you would not
have to go to such drastic measures to remove.... I almost always can remove
most filter with my hands....

I bet you're right.  I haven't had the bike long; the previous filter
was put on by someone else.  I have been wondering why filters are
typically torqued so tight.  I just assumed it was to prevent oil
leaks and followed suit.

However, I didn't torque the new filter as tight as the old one, just
until I could feel the gasket start to compress.  So it'll come off
easier next time.  That nut on the end of the K&N filter really is
brilliant, though.  As long as one realizes it's made of the same
rather soft metal as the rest of the canister, so you can't crank on
it much.

I believe there's a special tool Harley uses to get the filter off.
It's probably expensive.

Don't remember what I paid for one back in '00, but it was nominal.

might be duplicates.  Hard for me to tell.
