In the old days, everybody used to complain about "AOLosers", but these
days, it's Google Groups that is causing most of the problems. Google,
doesn't seem to be doing anything about usenet abuse complaints, is
impossible to contact for the most part and seems to allow anybody to
create a new account over and over, even if they've had other Google
Groups accounts canceled.
Your mileage may vary regarding how you view posting from Google Groups,
but I for one have had my fill of all the spamming, sporge and other
idiocy originating from Google Groups.
Thus, from this point on, I for one will be filtering out ALL posts
originating from Google Groups. There are a few good people who are
using Google Groups to access this group, but there are not enough of
them that it's worth my time to have to put up with all the spew coming
from Google. To the good Google Groups posters, I say:
- You need to figure out how to configure Outlook Express, Thunderbird
or some other news reader of your choice to access usenet directly.
- If your ISP doesn't provide usenet access via either their own servers
or through somebody else (my ISP subcontracts Supernews, for instance),
get a free account with Motzarella:
http://www.motzarella.org/en/index.php
and THEN use the aforementioned news reader to access usenet through
that service.
For various reasons which I won't go into here, I use Thunderbird as my
newsreader of choice. Unfortunately, it doesn't really have a good
filtering mechanism incorporated into it yet (am hoping that an
extension will be written that will do filtering on any subject header.)
However, it is possible to use NewsProxy (AKA NFilter) in conjunction
with Thunderbird to block everything coming from Google Groups:
http://nfilter.org/
I'm using version 1.2.4 which isn't available from that site (but
version 1.2.0 will work.) I just looked at alt.binaries.freeware and
there are a couple of copies of that version posted there, they have the
same mds hash and so are identical. Just downloaded a copy for my
archives in fact.
Once you get NewsProxy set up and running (note RUNNING, and it's very
simple to do), be sure to configure it to access your news server via
port 119. Next, configure Thunderbird to use NewsProxy by doing the
following:
1. right click on your usenet account name
2. select "Properties"
3. click on "Server Settings"
4. replace the contents of the "Server Name:" field with simply
"localhost" (no quotation marks). Thunderbird will appear to lock up but
be patient; it will eventually resume operation and the name of the
account will be changed to "localhost".
Finally, double click on the NewsProxy system tray icon so that the
configuration window opens and do the following:
1. click on "Edit"
2. select "Filters" by clicking on it
3. your filter file will open in Notepad at this point and it's simply a
text file
4. place (copy and paste) the following line all the way at the bottom
of the filter:
rec.motorcycles.harley drop Message-ID:*googlegroups.com*
or if you want to filter Google Groups posts from every newsgroup that
you read, the following will work:
* drop Message-ID:*googlegroups.com*
If you just want to label Google Groups posts as a kind of alert (I have
tried simply doing this, but am now giving up) you can use the following:
* aflag:>GOOGLER<--- Message-ID:*googlegroups.com*
Make sure you put a shortcut to NewProxy in your Startup folder so that
it will run every time you start your computer up, or you will often
forget to start it.
Most newsfeeds use the Message-ID: header as an "overview field", so
this guide should work for you if you're using Thunderbird. If you're
using another news reader, it shouldn't take much to figure out how to
configure it to use NewsProxy as what it is.... a usenet proxy.
AHHHHH! The sound of quiet!!!!

Was having a bad day over in acf. There's an idiot Googler there who
pretends he's participating in the group by making short, idiotic
comments like:
"Me to!"
"Thanks for posting that!"
"That looks good!"
followed by the same set of links to his web pages. I've asked him to
put them in his signature file, but the guy is either an idiot or simply
trolling, and refuses to do so. That way, other Googlers replying to him
quote his links and do the spamming for him. Not only that, but he uses
multiple nyms. I can't think of any way to shut him down other than
filtering out all Google posts.

Actually, I only filter out Googlers from in the alt.comp.freeware
newsgroup. My filter line is:
#alt.comp.freeware aflag:>GOOGLER<--- Message-ID:*googlegroups.com*
alt.comp.freeware drop Message-ID:*googlegroups.com*
The pound sign at the start of a line it inoperable, so the first line
does nothing, the second works.
