Recap: I had an accident on the Ultra Classic June 16 which I don't
remember. Broke a couple of ribs and lost my spleen in the accident.
Got severe concussion, brain still not quite working right. Spent 8
days in the hospital, rest of the time home recovering.
Quick update -- I got all the staples out a couple days ago and had my
second series of cerebral tests. Did better than the first set in the
hospital but they still scheduled me for three rehab sessions to get
brain working like it should.
Ribs not bothering me at all at this time and incision just itches a
little. Still a little tired from the anemia but doing better.
The main thing is, I got a call from the insurance company that
they're going to total the bike. This is not good news. The dealer
specifically targeted structural items only and ignored many cosmetic
issues to try to keep the price down, ending up at a little over $5k.
I still owe about $9K on the bike so I suspect I'm severely upside
down on the loan. Kelly Blue Book says my bike in perfect shape would
sell for about $13K, and although no bike is in *perfect* shape, it
was still in damned good shape before the accident. I think there's
room for negotiation. I wish I didn't have to handle this in my
current condition.
In the past when a vehicle was totaled I've bought it back and fixed
it. But in both cases I owned the vehicle outright before the
accident. I don't know what's going to happen this time. Any
suggestions?

Did the insurance adjuster look at it, he will have a word on the
replacement parts too. Tell him damaged parts were over looked and its not a
fair price.

Agree with Carl. Don't go solely by the dealer's estimate, the insurance
company needs to have their adjuster so a separate valuation.
Didn't have GAP insurance huh? Double check your finance paperwork,
maybe you bought it and forgot about it.

Another thing to remember, once the insurance company decides to total
it they no longer look at the repair cost. They look at the value of the
bike the split-second before the accident. That takes into account the
cosmetic condition, the year, the number of miles on the bike. Then
they'll do a comp of other bikes in the area to see what they're for
sale at. If it comes out to more than you owe on the bike then you
should be okay. I just went through this on a car that was burned by an
arsonist in my driveway, and that's what I went through when my '05 was
stolen.
